I have to say there is something really special about the way Caren Werlinger writes. I read her later novels earlier before realizing this was her debut novel. For a debut novel, she has certainly hit a clear home run and rounded the bases many times. Caren infuses her characters with a lot of realism, that you or I could easily recognize ourselves, our friends in the characters she writes. Anyone of us could have been Emily or Ann. Looking through Windows was an amazing love story, of triumph of love over hurts, mistrusts and willingness to expose our own vulnerabilities in order to grasp what love has to offer. I plan on reading the rest of her novels since all three so far (Neither Present Time, In This Small Spot and Looking Through Windows) have been excellent reads. A good debut novel, Ms. Werlinger's later novels show her improvement and skill as a wordsmith. For this one though, it felt like being told what was going on instead of it playing out in front of me...couldn't connect with either character or their chemistry.
Emily Warner's last relationship ended with the untimely death of her partner. Four years later she moves to Vermont to begin a new life. The past however catches up with her. Emily meets Ann Hight and Ann helps Emily through her pain. They fall in love, but are then torn apart by the deceit of a family member, which is then not helped by unexpected happenings to one of the women.
This book is truly wonderful. I was enthralled from the first page right through to the last. I really hope Caren writes another book and soon. This one is just not enough for me. I also hope that this book becomes more widely available as so many are missing out on a great book.
The author has created a believable story about what it means to communicate and trust someone with their heart. The struggles the two have ,cancer being one of them was one barrier to overcome. Enjoy!
Wow. I've read most of Caren's books, but somehow had missed this one. I can't believe it's her debut book. She is such a special writer. The emotions she can evoke are actually startling. I cried in several places and was shocked in another. A lovely story.
I enjoyed reading this story and I loved the characters. I can't imagine all the emotions that Emily had gone through to even think about loving Ann in the first place. Then after everything that happened. Wow.
This book is a must read for all lesbian couples, it is the true meaning of tolerance, forgiving and the true meaning of a loving relationship. You really scored an honor as a great writer on this one Carol. Thanks!
Wow, what a great story. Caren has done a marvelous job telling the world just how hard coming out to your family can be. Her characters as always are outstanding and you will not be able to put this book down. Kudos for marvelous storytelling.
